Between East and West: Karel Chytil as Museologist, Educator, and Art Historian
The text deals with the institutional and cultural political aspects of Karel Chytil’s career as an art historian, museologist, and lecturer. Although Chytil is a prominant figure in the field of the Czech scientific and artistic culture at the end of the nineteenth and in the first third of the twentieth centuries, there is no complex monograph dedicated to him and only a small number of articles. Interest of the author was to remind of an important aspect of Chytil’s intellectual biography, which can be symbolically expressed by the polarity East–West. It is focused on Chytil’s sociability, not the methods of his work, i.e. it is about his social contacts, institutional position, and the aspects of his public activity.
