CZ*ECO NELSON

Second polar station in Antarctica or rather its rebuilding on the Nelson island is intended to help support future Czech research in this area. Except the polar research itself, there will be testing of new materials and technologies, with possible applications
for example in space programmes. The design and implementation of the building is carried out in cooperation between the Faculty of Architecture Brno University of Technology, the Czech Antarctic
Foundation and the Polar Research at Masaryk University and others. Unlike in the inland of Antarctica which is known by its the very low temperatures and low humidity this location is unique in having a highly variable temperature, high humidity and strong gusty winds. This brings a lot of technical issues into the building engineering. Therefore, the construction is an experimental challenge in terms of the use of materials and manufacturing processes and the designers are looking for the right combination of traditional materials and the latest technologies.
