The influence of the type and location of the urban structure on the sustainable spatial development

  • Project led by Assoc. Prof. Gabriel Kopáčik, funded by Czech Science Foundation GA ČR, carried out from 2017 to 2019. The project was based on the assumption, that individual types of urban structures and their location within the body of the city affect the quality of life of the local inhabitants, i.e. social coexistence, environmental quality, economic costs, but also the sustainable development of the entire city. The project used examples of selected Central European cities to define characteristic basic types of urban structures and examines their relationship to sustainable spatial development. It evaluated the fulfilment of specific indicators of sustainable development for each researched characteristic locality, with an attempt to identify the type of urban structure which is the most convenient for the long-term development of the city. - (GAČR 17-26104S)

The book summarizes the results of the research project funded by the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic (GA ČR) titled "The influence of the type and location of the urban structure on the sustainable spatial development," which was conducted at the Institute of Urbanism, Faculty of Architecture, Brno University of Technology, from 2017 to 2019. In three Central European cities, Brno, Ostrava, and Zlín, we defined characteristic fundamental types of urban structures and examined their relationship to sustainable spatial development. We investigated whether different types of urban structures and their placement within the urban fabric have an impact on the quality of life for local residents, including social cohesion, the environment, economic costs, and the overall sustainable development of the city. This research extended the knowledge gained at the same institution three years earlier while working on the project GAČR 15-05237S "The Significance of Open Spaces for Sustainable Urban Development" (Wittmann, 2017).
